What is ILR?
Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) lets migrants permanently live, study, and work in the UK without visa restrictions. It’s also known as settlement, permanent residence, or settled status.

- Use the NHS for free.
- Travel freely (with some restrictions).
- Apply for British citizenship after 1 year.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible if you:
- Meet residency requirements (usually 5 years on a qualifying visa).
- Have good character.
- Pass the Life in the UK test.
- Meet English language requirements.
- Haven’t spent too much time outside the UK in the qualifying period.
Types of ILR routes:
- Five-year route: Most common, requires 5 years on a qualifying visa like Skilled Worker or Spouse visa.
- Ten-year route: For those living in the UK for at least 10 years lawfully.
- Accelerated routes (2-3 years): Available for Innovator, Entrepreneur, Investor, and Global Talent visas.
How to apply:
- Check eligibility.
- Complete the online application.
- Pay application and biometric fees.
- Provide fingerprints and photo.
- Submit documents (e.g., passports, bank statements).
- Attend an interview (if requested).
Processing time:
- Standard: 6 months
- Priority: 5 days (extra fee)
- Super Priority: 1-2 days (extra fee)
ILR for dependents:
Your spouse/partner and children may also apply for ILR if they meet requirements.
British Citizenship after ILR:
Apply for British citizenship after 12 months of holding ILR.
